Welcome back to the Remedi Spa blog! Therapeutic massage is a wonderful treatment to improve overall health, stimulate circulation, reduce stress, and alleviate muscle tension. For mothers-to-be, their bodies undergo many dramatic changes over the course of the pregnancy and as a result, they often experience pain, swelling, and discomfort. Therefore, therapeutic massage is also an effective treatment that focuses specifically on the needs of expecting mothers and, today, we will explore some of the benefits that prenatal massage provides. Please continue reading below to learn more.
What is Prenatal Massage?
Prenatal massage is similar to a regular massage; however, the massage therapist customizes the body treatment to address issues caused by a pregnancy, including tense muscles, sore areas, swelling, joint, ligament, and tendon pain. A therapist may adjust the massage treatments according to the needs of the mother-to-be and the changes her body goes through in each trimester. Because there are some contraindications that may limit a therapist’s ability to work on certain trigger points and specific areas on the body, the therapist applies gentle pressure similar to the technique used during a Swedish massage. Additional massage methods used during a prenatal massage also include the use of pillows and cushions to support the body, making the expecting mother as comfortable as possible. Heat and essential oils may also help increase relaxation.
Alleviates Common Discomforts
As the body changes to make room for the growing baby, these changes can create discomfort throughout a woman’s body. As the baby grows, the inner organs shift around which can lead to stomach pain, bloating, constipation, and shortness of breath. Carrying a tiny human inside you can affect your balance, posture, and places a great deal of stress on the entire back—especially the lower back and hips. Massage can alleviate muscle aches and joint pain caused by the changes the body undergoes during a pregnancy. Other common discomforts that massage therapy can relieve include headaches, shoulder pain, and neck pain. Relieving these aches and pains can improve a mother’s posture, spinal alignment, and flexibility, which can be thrown off by a baby’s increasing weight.
Mothers-to-be commonly experience swelling in the extremities, but especially in the lower legs, ankles, and feet. Massage improves blood flow which brings oxygen and nutrients to both the mother and the tiny baby growing inside her. Improving circulation also stimulates the lymphatic system which is key to remaining healthy during a pregnancy. A healthy lymphatic system increases immunity and removes toxins that attribute to illnesses, muscle tension, and stiffness.
Massage therapy is one of the best remedies for reducing stress. Prenatal massage relaxes sore muscles that can attribute to stress while also soothing the nervous system, allowing the mother to feel more at ease as her muscles relax. A gentle touch combined with soothing music, essential oils that enhance relaxation, and the simple act of being still can do wonders for both the body and mind.
Improves Sleep Patterns
Because massage therapy encourages relaxation of the mind and body, the mom-to-be feels much more at ease after a massage. This relaxed feeling can help improve sleep patterns, allowing a mother to fall asleep much quicker and sleep more deeply throughout the night. Getting a good night’s sleep may also help ease stress and anxiety.
