Hints for Fighting Wintertime Dry Skin

Use a Humidifier

When it’s cold outside, it’s wonderful coming home to a toasty house, but the truth is, the heaters in our homes are one of the top culprits for causing dry skin. Running the heater day-in and day-out reduces the amount of moisture in the air, which takes a toll on your skin, hair, and sinuses. One way to fight dryness in your home is to improve moisture levels by running a humidifier. It’s a good idea to place one in each room where you spend most of your time, typically the living room and bedroom. If anything, definitely run a humidifier in your bedrooms while you sleep to help restore your skin’s moisture.

Hint: Fill your humidifier with lukewarm water for best results. Run the humidifier at about 65-75 percent to avoid creating condensation. Clean your humidifier every other time you fill it to prevent mildew from building up. Try adding in 20 drops of essential oils like lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus for aromatherapy benefits that can aid in sinus and respiratory congestion.

Moisturize Your Skin Daily

It’s important to moisturize your skin daily by applying a nourishing moisturizing lotion, cream, or serum in the morning and at night. This can help restore and lock-in moisture on your face and body during the day and while you sleep. Apply a weekly face and body mask rich in fruit and plant extracts as well as Vitamins B3 and E to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin.

Hint: Avoid moisturizers containing petroleum, and instead, use high-quality moisturizers like Vital C Water Burst for brighter, healthier-looking skin. Ask the Remedi Spa team about Vital C and other take-home hydrating skincare products we offer at our spa.

Exfoliate Face and Body

It’s essential to include an exfoliating routine in your normal skincare regimen. Gently scrubbing away the outer layer of dry, dead skin allows for fresh, new skin to show. Plus, layers of dry skin only make it harder for oxygen, moisture, and nutrients to efficiently penetrate the healthy, underlying layers of skin. What’s more, exfoliating your face and body leaves your skin glowing, soft, and radiant.

Hint: Exfoliate your skin at least once a week and moisturize immediately afterward. When scrubbing your skin, use gentle pressure and let the exfoliating scrub do its job. Scrubbing with too much pressure can be painful and may cause redness and abrasions on the skin.
