Welcome back to our blog! Last time, we began looking at some of the advantages of receiving prenatal massages over the course of a pregancy. Prenatal massage eases common discomforts associated with pregnancy, improves circulation, reduces stress, and encourages better sleep. There are many more wonderful benefits to be gained from prenatal massage and today, we’d like to look at these.
Alleviates Lower Back Pain
One of the most rewarding aspects of massage is that it can significantly ease lower back pain. On top of the normal stresses placed on the lower back, a woman’s body undergoes dramatic changes as the ligaments and tendons shift and stretch as the baby grows. What’s more, as the baby’s weight increases during those nine months, more weight is placed on the lumbar spine, sacrum, hips, and pelvis. This tends to throw the spine out of alignment and affects a woman’s posture when she stands, walks, sits, and even sleeps. A massage therapist can work out sore spots in the lower back and loosen muscles to improve posture, reduce lower back pain, and increase flexibility. A therapist may also recommend gentle stretching that the mother-to-be can do at home for added relief.
During a pregnancy, a mom-to-be experiences dramatic increases in estrogen and progesterone levels, as well as changes in the production and function of other hormones. These sudden hormonal changes can affect a pregnant woman’s mood, and often cause an expecting mother to experience feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, which contribute to headaches, neck and back pain, and leg soreness. One study shows that women who received regular prenatal massage treatments “experienced significant decreases in depression, anxiety, anger, back pain, and leg pain.” Therefore, massage therapy can actually stabilize hormonal levels that can affect a woman’s mood.
A common condition moms-to-be experience is edema, or swelling of the joints, and swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet. This is caused by increased pressure on the blood vessels and decreased circulation. Massage encourages circulation by stimulating the soft tissues to break up built-up fluid and toxins in swollen joints, which also helps remove the toxins by way of the lymphatic system. This not only improves muscle and joint function, but also increases range of motion, flexibility, and reduces pain.
